The railroad friends look forward and backward

A look back at an eventful year dominated the annual general meeting of the rodachtalbahn railroad enthusiasts. Ten years of the museum railroad as well as numerous work assignments on the vehicles, the railroad line and at durrenwaid station have resulted in a large number of volunteer hours being worked.
Work is in full swing on the extension of the track facilities at durrenwaid train station. In the medium term, the construction of a hall for the rolling stock is planned. The klv 53 heavy-duty light rail vehicle required for track maintenance received its main inspection last year and can therefore be used for another eight years.

So far exempt from fees

Up to now, due to the insular location of the museum railroad, the association has been exempt from charging track fees for the use of the route by other transport companies within the framework of non-discriminatory access. Due to a change in the law, fees for the use of tracks and platforms had to be calculated on the basis of the maintenance costs of the facilities and submitted to the federal network agency for approval. Since the railroad friends are the only users of the infrastructure, the association therefore charges itself for the costs incurred. It is hoped, however, that the applications for exemption will be approved. Ultimately, however, the EU commission will decide on the procedure for the eleven-kilometer-long museum railroad, says chairman ralf ellinger.
The number of members has not changed compared to last year. However, it is pleasing to note that several young people have joined the club. Another good news: erich lehnhardt has been a member of the association for 25 years and, in addition to his job as a shunting locomotive driver for the deutsche bahn, he also works for the museum railroad as a locomotive driver and rail bus supervisor. Chairman ralf ellinger thanked for his honorary engagement.

Herb mixtures in forchheim: house search

Herb mixtures in forchheim: house search

With the search and seizure of a large number of herbal mixtures, the police and the public prosecutor's office in bamberg have now sent a clear signal in the fight against a corresponding store in the city center of forchheim.

Numerous teens and young adults have required medical treatment after consuming herbal mixtures in recent months. A preliminary investigation is underway against the operators for offenses under the narcotics act, the police and the public prosecutor's office announced in a joint press release.

Especially many affected

Volker braun of the commissioner's office IV of the criminal police bamberg said in an interview with the FT in april this year: "at the moment it is indeed the case that there have been increased incidents in forchheim. In 2016 alone there have been 40 traps so far. Basically, it is not that you can say that it only affects forchheim, but that it affects scenes. It may of course be related to the fact that in forchheim at the moment the availability is there. In one or two months, the scene may also have shifted, for example, to the bamberg area." A relocation could now be imminent due to current developments.
At the end of february, the operators opened the store in forchheim's city center.

To the paradise of amphibians

To the paradise of amphibians

This year’s autumn excursion of the volkach branch of the nature conservation association went to the half-mile lake near the barracks in the east of the town of volkach. For the chairman willi freibott the lake, which is protected as a natural monument, is a gem for the amphibian world, as he is quoted in a press release.

"The earth red, the garlic red, the grass frog and the pond newt all feel at home here," the nature conservationist explained to the participants. The lake not only benefited from the water of the much smaller rothenbachsee lake to the north, the amphibian tunnel system with 21 pipes ensured the exchange of amphibians between the two waters and improved reproduction conditions. The heavily used road to eichfeld has no longer cost any losses on this section since the completion of the structure. This habitat with a wide reed belt and herbaceous area, emphasized honorary chairman hans schneider, is also of special importance for the many waterfowl, such as puffins, wild ducks, great crested grebes and mute swans for the rearing of their young and as protection and resting zones. But also the birdlife, such as herons and reed warblers, took advantage of the natural oasis.

The participants agreed that such retreat areas are becoming increasingly important for the preservation of native nature in view of the increasing consumption of land for construction and roads and the coarse intensive cultivation of the landscape, the message concluded.

gold dream ended: german handball players miss world championship final

German president frank-walter steinmeier consoled captain uwe gensheimer in the catacombs of the hamburg arena, while national coach christian prokop looked ahead again shortly after the end of the german handball team’s gold dream.

With the 25:31 (12:14) defeat in a long gripping semifinal against norway, the DHB selection missed the first entry into the world championship final since the triumph twelve years ago and will now play on sunday (14.30 hrs/ZDF) in herning, danish, against record world champion france for the bronze medal. "We did not play at the optimum today. At the moment, the exchange is rough," said prokop. "But we still have something to do and we will get up."

Steinmeier addressed words of encouragement to the team after the final whistle. "That was a great time. Too bad, today it was not enough. This team inspired. That was a real, real promotion for handball," said the president of the federal government. Together with his wife he comforted the players.

Virtual fight against speed cameras

Virtual fight against speed cameras

Yesterday morning, a user reported on the facebook page "speed camera kitzingen": "speed camera at the exit of kaltensondheim in the direction of erlach in the 50 zone." He is one of around 1,800 friends of the site at present – and the trend is upward. Apparently everyone is fed up with getting traffic tickets. The principle of how to avoid it is very simple: as soon as a facebook user sees a speed camera or a police officer with a laser gun, he or she can leave a message on facebook within a few seconds using an internet-enabled cell phone. All friends of "blitzer kitzingen" are then automatically notified – and do not fall into the radar trap, at least at the location concerned.
Harald hoffmann, head of the police inspection (PI) kitzingen, does not find such offers objectionable. "If it's spread with the message that driving slowly is important, i'm fine with it." Perhaps , says hoffmann, this will also appeal to drivers who are not driving on stretches of road where the police are currently taking measurements. He hopes that this will automatically make people drive slower.

Police write 1 100 reports

This hope was not fully realized last year, however. Speeding was still the cause of around 260 accidents in the district. This means a slight decrease compared to the previous year:
"last year we measured a total of 290 hours of speed with our hand-held measuring devices. In 2010 it was 170 hours", says hoffmann. In 2011 the police inspection kitzingen wrote a total of 450 reports. That means the 450 drivers were speeding at least 21 kilometers per hour either in or out of town. "We set our laser measuring device in such a way that it is mainly the speeders who are caught in our net", explains hoffmann.
The kitzingen police department mainly measures the. Precisely there "where accidents often occur and where there is a high volume of complaints", says hoffmann. "We want to catch speeders", he emphasizes again. "We're not in it for the money, that goes into the state budget." The police are at real trouble spots such as schools or kindergartens, says helmut habermann, deputy head of the wurzburg-biebelried traffic police, which supports the kitzingen police force in monitoring traffic. "And of course at blind spots in towns and cities where accidents often occur." "The kitzingen police station is responsible for evaluating the driving points", habermann explains the cooperation. Last year, the traffic police measured around 450 hours of traffic in the entire district at the following locations. In this period she has written 651 reports.
But not all of the fines imposed end up directly in the state's coffers: "it's a different story when municipalities have opted for municipal traffic monitoring", says hoffmann. This applies to about half of all administrative communities in the district of kitzingen.
But no matter whether it is the police or the municipal traffic control that does the speeding, it could soon be "blitzer kitzingen" heiben: "blitzer in the gartenstrabe." Residents have complained about speeding there.
The organizers behind "blitzer kitzingen stand, wanted with the "kitzinger" do not talk about their facebook page. Police officer habermann can live with their offer just as well as his colleague hoffmann: "we don't care why people keep to the speed limit. It is important to us that they drive slowly."

Cortese wins world championship – all wm titles gone

Cortese wins world championship - all wm titles gone

With ease and patience cortese rode away from his competitors in the moto3 class and spared his father’s birthday with the triumphant ride. "This was a victory for him that brought me into the world championship, brought me up from a young age. A big thank you to him," said cortese after hugging his father at the finish line.

One week after the 22-year-old, the other candidates for the title also clinched their world championship victory in phillip island. In the moto2 class, a third-place finish was enough for spanish rider marc marquez to clinch the title ahead of the final grand prix in valencia on 11. November to become stefan bradl’s successor.

Jorge lorenzo secures his second title after 2010 with a second place in the motogp kings class. The spaniard benefited from the retirement of his compatriot and rival dani pedrosa due to a crash. Winning his home race, australian casey stoner achieved the feat of winning for the sixth time in a row. Last year’s world champion ends his career after this season.

Poor prospects for new assault rifle ban in the usa

poor prospects for new assault rifle ban in the usa

There are not enough supporters for such a rule in the upper house of the washington congress. Even in his own party there are many opponents.

With this, obama will probably have to write off his demand for a "sensibly designed" ban on such assault weapons. It was part of his initiative after the rampage at a school in newtown (connecticut), where an assassin shot 20 children and six adults with an AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle in december. A nationwide ban on certain rapid-fire weapons automatically expired in 2004 after ten years.

Other restrictions demanded by obama could still make it into law. These include extensive screening of gun buyers, a maximum limit on the number of cartridges per magazine and measures to combat illegal arms trafficking. After the senate, the house of representatives also had to pass the bill. There, the republicans have the majority, who reject obama’s push for stricter gun laws.

President gauck by queen elizabeth ii. Received

president gauck by queen elizabeth ii. Received

Together with his partner daniela schadt, the german president was received by the queen and her husband prince philip at the portal of buckingham palace. Afterwards, the meeting continued indoors with a lunch and working talks.

One of the topics to be discussed is the german-british relationship. The british royal family has german roots. The queen’s great-grandfather, prince albert, was german. Until 1917, the british royal family was called saxony-coburg-gotha, before it was renamed windsor for political reasons.

In his eight months in office, gauck (72) is in london for the third time. At the start of the olympic games, he was also received by the queen along with about 100 other heads of state. At the subsequent paralympics for disabled athletes, gauck met members of the german team, as he had at the olympics.
